This community-led data program is in its pilot phase now and will be officially launched in late 2021/early 2022.
We plan to build upon our community engagement based on Communitas Ventures, our cohort-based social entrepreneurship accelerator program. As an intermediary organization that supports social entrepreneurship among underserved communities, Communitas America has focused on cultivating a social impact ecosystem and entrepreneurial community in the Bronx.
In collaboration with Bronx peer organizations and academic partners, we will start a data and research project, CASA (Collect, Analyze, Share, and Apply), to collect relevant local data to support essential small businesses and entrepreneurs in the Bronx. The intent is to help them make data-driven and evidence-based decisions that integrate visible tools and resources into the local community.
- First, we will collect from different sources of entrepreneurs’ conversations and open source data from New York City agencies and other partners.
- Then, we will analyze soft data, based on conversations, by two methods: manual transcription and automatic speech recognition. Our academic partner will conduct various text mining analyses to parse out themes that emerge from conversations, particularly related to education, health and well-being, and financial inclusion. The research team will also analyze whether issues outlined in the soft data are aligned with statistics from the hard data.
- Based on key insights that emerge from data analysis, we will share findings with both the community members and peer organizations devoted to sustainable development of the Bronx. Creatives in the neighborhood will be given opportunities to translate data into interactive forms. Some examples of possible collaborations include open calls for collaboration through hackathons and opportunities for Bronx-based local artists to create films and interactive web-based publications. Moreover, the Impact Model of the CASA project will also be shared to peer organizations.
Lastly, we will apply lessons learned from local businesses and entrepreneurs, who will now have experienced firsthand, how their own observations can be complemented by hard data collected from governments, analyzed by academic partners, and shared by local creatives.
