As marijuana approaches federal legalization and public perception becomes more accepting in recent years, it is now easier than ever to purchase and possess cannabis products in more than half the country. For communities previously impacted by the war on drugs, however, the path towards participating in this industry is still difficult. Cannabis companies have adopted the marketing aesthetics of cigarette and tobacco products with eye-catching designs that reinforce stereotypes and attract younger users. At the same time, child- and pet-proofing solutions are usually inadequate in preventing accidental exposure to the psychoactive effects of cannabis. In response, Communitas Ventures Cohort 8 entrepreneur Greg Chan is launching For Grownups to create access, destigmatize, and encourage safe and healthy habits around cannabis usage.
Originally from Guyana, Greg has lived in the Bronx since he was 14. Witnessing the injustices against those who depend on cannabis and the exclusionary practices of the legal industry fueled his drive to become a vocal cannabis activist in his adult life. When New York began offering a legal pathway to recreational cannabis sales, Greg saw an opportunity to not only innovate how we access, consume and store cannabis, but also educate and empower others.
“For Grownups was inspired by everything from how authorities have handled cannabis possession and sale in our communities to issues of unintentional cannabis exposure, which has spiked in recent years particularly in children and pets,” Greg shares. “Those are some of the emerging problems, along with the CDC reporting that about 3 in 10 people may develop Marijuana Use Disorder, an addiction disorder associated with usage. With legalization on the horizon, we need to rethink usage and access to cannabis in homes.”
For Grownups’ line of products are centered around a smart storage device that allows users to discreetly secure and child-proof their cannabis products, creating a sense of security by alerting users when it is left open or disturbed. The design simplicity and feedback system is tailored for a modern, mature user seeking discretion and adds to the innovative quality of the container, which Greg believes will set it apart on the market. He also hopes that commercial success with For Grownups will allow him opportunities to build new impact verticals, including a collection of educational content to help others break into the industry and a marketplace to create an alternative platform for small, NYS-based inclusive brands to sell their products.
“While I am primarily a technologist and designer - I’ve pursued different business solutions and learned more about entrepreneurship along the way,” Greg shares. “My design work centers on digitizing human experiences through a de-colonial, antiracist and counter-hegemonic framework. For Grownups is an opportunity for me to build a cannabis ecosystem for the future.”
