Diving into Entrepreneurship: A Risk Worth Taking
By Olga Perez, Cohort 11 alum, and MVP Swimmers Founder
Congratulations!! You have made the decision to follow your dream and make an impact!
You have embarked into the unknown of being an entrepreneur!
Some people have a dream, some people hope to one day and some people make a decision.
I am one of those people who made a decision to embark into becoming an entrepreneur after being rejected for a promotion.
In 2017, I asked for a promotion from my job and was told "we don't have a position like that available at the time, but you can continue to do the work you have been doing". It was after that I decided to make my own company MVP Lifeguards! I formulated MVP Lifeguards as a Limited Liability Company with LegalZoom. I attended New York City Small Business Services workshops. I obtained my NYC Minority Women Business Enterprise (M/WBE) certification. I registered MVP Lifeguards with SAM and Dun & Bradstreet.
In 2021, I had $3,000 in the bank and was $30,000 in debt. I didn't know what I was going to do, but I held on to it and saw the bank withdrawing fees every month.
In the summer of 2021 I received an email from the New York City Department of Health asking if I was interested in teaching teenagers how to swim to become a lifeguard!
I am proud to say that MVP Lifeguards has secured a six-year contract with the New York City Department of Health-Making Waves Program!
To you I say, follow your heart, don't stop no matter the challenge, quitting is never an option, believe in yourself and you will make it!
After the success of MVP Lifeguards, I created MVP Swimmers! MVP Swimmers teaches swimming lessons to all participants starting from the age of 6 to Seniors.
MVP Swimmers has been an equally exciting journey as MVP Lifeguards. You have to love what you are doing in order to be able to do it everyday!
I am grateful to Communitas America for continuing to support both MVP Lifeguards and MVP Swimmers. It's an amazing feeling to have the team at Communitas proofread my grant proposal, being invited to attend special events and having available resources to grow my venture!
The journey is not easy, if it was everyone would be doing it! Entrepreneurs are built differently!
I wish you all the best in your venture and be proud of how far you have come so far and the potential you have to reach your dream of success!
Sincerely,
Olga L. Perez
