Making an Impact in Bengali Sex Education
By Bushra Mollick, founder of Bushra Apa, and Cohort 11 alum.
"This is how you put on a tampon," I said in Bangla in front of my ring light. I wore my bright fuchsia, pink branding and inserted a fresh tampon into a glass of clear water and explained what a tampon was and how it doesn't affect your virginity.
I filmed the one minute and 26 second reel to Instagram and posted. After winning $6,000 in grants from Communitas America, I used funding for the first time to boost an Instagram reel.
I spent just $60 over a span of six days, and the reel reached more than 97,000 Bengali-speaking people and it had been saved more than 200 times. Talk about impact!
My time during the Communitas America program was special because we covered everything from impact models, finances, marketing and more. I used my marketing background and the lessons learned from our virtual lectures to apply these skills to my campaigns.
In a matter of days, I went from 1,100 followers to more than 3,000. Today, I have more than 14K followers on Instagram! As I continue my journey as the first Bangladeshi sex educator, I can't wait to lead more campaigns, film more reels, and publish more books.
So what's next? Coming soon is my book, "Purba and Kamrul Play Together," a children's book that covers good touch versus bad touch.
I can't wait for the next step.
Love always,
