Make it Gorjus: Tips for Creating Beautiful Content for Your Business
By Cohort 11 alum and Gorjus Sex Ed founder Dr. Natasha Ramsey
In the digital age, visual content has become an integral part of communication, whether you're a business professional, student, or social media enthusiast. Creating eye-catching designs and graphics no longer requires advanced graphic design skills: there are lots of user-friendly tools. My go-to for all my content creation is Canva. As a business dedicated to curating beautiful, medically accurate, and reproductive justice centered sexual health resources for youth and the people who serve them, creating captivating content is necessary for the work that I do. I made my logo, all my handouts, presentations, and even this blog post with Canva! I promise, I’m not getting paid by Canva… yet. And the best part is that it is free and the premium version is very affordable. Canva has lots of resources and in-depth articles for beginners so I won’t bore you with the basics. This blog post is how to take those basic skills to the next level to make your brand standout.
Here are some quick tips for using Canva to maximize your content and make it aesthetically pleasing:
Branding
Knowing your brand identity, brand colors, logos, fonts, images, illustrations, and tone is helpful when creating designs. Also knowing your brand voice, brand's mission, vision, values and brand's personality and the emotions you want to evoke in your audience. Canva can be useful to explore logos, fonts, and brand colors if you are not sure. Canva also has AI features that can help with brand voice and tone.
Explore Templates and Designs
There are a ton of different templates available, including social media graphics, presentations, posters, documents, marketing materials and more. And there are a bunch of different designs for each template. Based on your brand you can search specific designs like “flowers” or “simple” to see design templates. You can even mix and match from similar designs to create your own unique design. You can also resize designs instead of starting from scratch. If you made a cool social media post and want to change it into a flyer or a t-shirt design, you can try the resize option to keep things consistent and save time.
Make it your own
Once you find designs and templates you like, make them your own! Change the words and lettering to match what works for your brand and brand voice. Utilize the Text tool to add headings, subheadings, and body text. Adjust font styles, sizes, and colors to enhance readability. Use consistent images throughout your design and between designs. For example, if you are using an image with a black outline try to use another picture with a similar design. You can search the particular artist who made the image or “See more like this'' to find consistent images. You can even save your favorite images for future use.
Keep working on it
Save multiple versions of what you are making in the same document so you can compare different designs, arrangements, colors, backgrounds, placements, fonts etc without losing your work. Share your designs with your co-workers, supervisors, and friends to get feedback and even collaborate on designs together.
Hope this was helpful, and remember to keep exploring!
