Building a Movement:
We're on a mission, and we're doing it differently. Unlock NYC, a tech collective, is redefining the housing landscape by building tech tools that empower tenants, combat housing discrimination, and pave the way from homelessness to housing. Our multidisciplinary, intergenerational, and 100% women-led team is creating more than just solutions – we're forging a movement.
Growth and Racial Equity:
Over the past two years Unlock NYC has experienced exponential growth. Central to our success is the promotion of racial equity through an innovative governance model that values lived experience and consensus-based decision-making. Our leadership proudly consists of BIPOC women who have walked the same paths as those we empower.
Equitable Compensation and Workplace Flexibility:
In 2022, Unlock NYC introduced its proudest flex – the "equitable compensation calculator." This tool exemplifies our commitment to creating a flexible workplace that fosters career growth, financial security, and long-term stability for our diverse team. The calculator ensures that each team member receives a salary and benefits package that takes into account factors such as child care, dependent care, and lived experience bonuses.
Leadership Development Program:
At the heart of our success lies the Leadership Development program – a beacon of community-building and upward mobility. By identifying emerging leaders within our user base, we offer internships, advisory roles, and training for individuals, creating a dynamic leadership pipeline. Our leadership development program boasts a 100% satisfaction rate, with participants reporting enhanced skills in data-driven storytelling, public speaking, and non-profit operations. The impact transcends our organization, as our alumni actively contribute to societal change by participating in nonprofit boards, advising the Mayor's office, and engaging in broader community initiatives.
Practical Tips & Tricks for Your Journey
Needs-Based Compensation Structure: Determining how to pay ourselves is not always easy, but we crafted an employee compensation structure that is tailored to the needs of our team, inspired by resources like the Sustainable Economies Law Center "How To Pay Ourselves Equitably" and the MIT Living Wage Calculator.
Conflict Navigation and Conversations about Race: We've teamed up with transformative justice consultants (check them out at https://www.harmonize.work/). As a result, our team handles conflicts smoothly and have honest discussions about race in an open, collaborative environment.
The Leadership Collective: Unlock NYC's governing board is powered by the Leadership Collective—a diverse group of experts with firsthand experience in issues like the voucher system, housing insecurity, discrimination, and homelessness. With a stipend to honor their dedication, members lend their expertise to critical discussions and initiatives. The cohort journey spans 6 months with monthly 90-minute engaging meetings.
